The rare and critally acclaimed recordings that have healded a movement towards the group vintage electronic textures. The collection includes two previously unreleased tracks, select songs off ther debut EP and an out of print gem.Reviews:
Modesto, California's favorite sons (and Giant Sand mainman Howe Gelb's favorite band) Grandaddy's latest isn't the official follow-up to 2000's The Sophtware Slump, but an odds-and-sods set of early/rare material. While nowhere near as left-field elegant as the V2 album, it still brims with indieish vim 'n' vigor.Included is the bulk of the '95 EP A Pretty Mess by This One Band (the lurching, strummy folk of "Gentle Spike Resort" and the desert-baked fuzzrock of "Pre Merced" illustrate why Gelb is such a fan) nestling alongside such unreleased gems as the dreamy-drone "My Small Love" and the John Lennon-meets-Flaming Lips "12-Pak-599." Also present is the entire Machines Are Not She EP, originally a '98 European mail-order only release, and as twistedly psychedelic as a lo-fi excursion gets-the Elephant 6 collective crash-lands in the Mojave, anyone? Not an introduction to the band, but a superb between-albums stopgap for fans just the same.
